About the Item

Friederike Oeser, a contemporary abstract painter, lives and works in Munich, Germany. For Oeser there is no hierarchy of visual value. It all has import—whether it be a trickle of water across a sidewalk, a child’s tilt of a head or a piece of chewing gum on a path. The tinier the detail and the seemingly inconsequential something seems, the more interest it has for the artist. She seeks newness all the time—the stranger the better. She welcomes loud and crazy, changing weather, wind, sunlight or clouds. “I stop if something excites me, a shape, a color,” she says. “The older I get the more surprised I am about how visually interesting the world is if you stop to look.” The artist works exclusively from reality and says the output is more compelling when she starts with what she can actually see.
