About the Item

In the early 1980's Charles Pachter approached the chairman of the TTC to do a Hockey-themed mural at the College Street subway station. It was a fitting idea as the station is just steps from the Toronto Maple Leaf's original home - the Maple Leaf Gardens. Although the artist encountered a lot of interference with his pending designs due to copyright of the team's logos and from other TTC bigwigs (who insisted that the player be depicted wearing helmets) the ambitious and impressive public art project finally debuted to great fanfare in April 1985. Over the last 30 years Pachter's "Hockey Knights in Canada" has become the TTC's most famous and beloved example of public art. It is composed of two groups of nine players. On one side is the Toronto Maple Leafs and on the opposite platform is the Montreal Canadians. This work is the final drawing that was realized in colored enamel on the mural. (It is the central panel in the color photo of the mural) Caviar20 is excited to be offering this important work.

Charles Pachter (b. 1942) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. His iconic, uplifting, and patriotic images have independently earned their place in the nation's museums and the Canadian art canon. The barn, along with Queen Elizabeth and the Moose, forms a triad of icons that Charles Pachter has repeatedly visited over the course of his career. Playful and a touch irreverent, Pachter's charming imagery presents a new narrative on Canadiana. The artist’s vast body of work includes painting, sculpture, printmaking, and drawing. Pachter’s works are widely sought-after and are an ideal selection for starting or continuing a collection of 20th-century Canadian art. Pachter's confident colors, sharp lines, and graphic qualities are instantly recognizable and continue to be a mainstay throughout his oeuvre. Here with an image of the classic TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) streetcars, this work epitomizes Pacther’s version of Canadian Pop Art...

Charles Pachter's iconic and celebrated series the Painter Flag was created in the early 1980's. For nearly forty years it has been one of his most sought-after creations and hangs in important commercial and public institutions across the country.
