About the Item

View of the Forum Romanum is an original modern artwork realized by the Italian painter Giuseppe Costantini (Nola, 1843 - Naples, 1893) in the second half of the 1800, probably in 1870s. Original oil and watercolor on paper mounted on canvas. Includes a gilded wooden frame. Total dimensions: 90 x 140 cm. In excellent conditions, this outstanding work is impressive for both its size and the quality on the details depicted. Costantini creates a magic and somehow unreal light which is at the same time bright and delicate, enhancing the monumentality of the ancient Roman ruins. Giuseppe Costantini (Nola, 1843 - Neaples, 1893). His painting represents in the typicality of genre scenes the custom of Neapolitan life and the everyday life of the people in the dusty interiors of the houses where he places children and old people in an exact reproduction of furniture, furnishings and objects of everyday life. Giuseppe Costantini was the son of Don Giovanni, surgeon at the Military Hospital of Nola (originally from San Paolo Belsito), and Donna Carmela, of the wealthy family of Beard Nola. Giuseppe was the fourth of five brothers. After first studying at the Seminary of Nola, he went to the Art Institute in Naples and attended the Academy of BB. AA. at Naples between 1865 and 1866. After his academic studies, he became friends with the painters of the School of Posillipo, but returned to Nola around 1870 to take over the directorship of the School of Design & Applied Arts, where he remained until 1893, year of the death.

Sorry for the reflections on the glass, but I didn't want to take this lovely frame apart. The close-ups are much better. This is a highly accomplished, superbly detailed watercolor of a the facade of a building in Rome, depicting Corinthian columns, a frieze and a free-standing tributary sculpture above. Image area itself is 10.5" x 6.25", framed size is 19.5" x 14". Matted and presented in a pretty antique wood frame that has some flaws from an apparently long history but is perfectly serviceable, as you can see. Exquisite detail, so hard to accomplish with watercolor. Came from august Houston...
