About the Item

Simkhovitch was a celebrated artist in New York City from the 1920's through the 1940's. Life Magazine did a story on him and he was having great success in the New York Galleries. At that time, he was a success story of an immigrant from Russia, working at the Royal Academy of St. Petersburg who came to America and adopted to American life. He also became a prominent participant in the WPA mural program. He did a series of works that received much attention at the time, of circus performers. Everyone from the ringmaster, to the tight-rope walkers to the acrobats. Here he is doing sketch to capture the posture of the acrobat mid-way through his trick while riding bareback! Little known today that this was a common performed act at that time! Simkhovitch was known for depicting the everyday man, worker and citizen. He often captured boxers, ladies at their breakfast tables having coffee or putting out the wash in the yard. He captured American life in its day to day modes. This is a fun drawing that can enliven any room to a place and time past. A bit of American history as it happened. The frame is gilded and hand carved frame of the Impressionist style. The piece is under glass. On the verso is the estate stamp. Signature is with Estate stamp, verso. Provenance: Estate of the Artist then by Descent to Elzira Simkhovitch By descent to current owner Measures inside frame: 6 x 8 inches
