About the Item

After studying at the Académie Humbert, Georges Lepape entered the workshop of Fernand Cormon at the Ecole des Beaux-Art in Paris in 1905. Marrying in 1909, he entered his work at the Salon d'Automne for the first time in 1910, showing a Portrait of Gabriella. It was on this occasion that he made the acquaintance of fashion designer Paul Poiret, who had commissioned Paul Iribe in 1908 to illustrate his first album entitled Les Robes de Paul Poiret and who was now looking for an artist capable of competing with Iribe's excellent job. The prints that Poiret commissioned from him in 1911 led to Les Choses de Paul Poiret…vues par George Lepape, a luxurious album showcasing the designer's collections. Lepape worked on every single issue of La Gazette du Bon Ton from 1912 to 1925 and soon other periodicals such as Femina, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar and L'Illustration were clamouring for him to work with them, as were a number of fashion houses including Worth, Lanvin, Paquin and Doucet. Lepape exercised his talent as a draughtsman and colourist in a broad range of different spheres, working on flyers, programmes and costumes for the theatre, on fabrics and fans and on advertising catalogues. In 1923 he illustrated Belgian writer Maurice Maeterlinck's fairy tale entitled L'oiseau bleu, while three years later the American publisher Condé Nast invited him to New York to offer him a contract designing covers for Vogue magazine. After the war Lepape devoted his enormous energy to the fields of advertising and publishing, illustrating some thirty volumes and continuing to work prolifically until his death in 1971. Georges Lepape succeeded in embodying the best of the mood and mores of a sophisticated and luxury-loving society as yet untarnished by the horrors of war. He proved capable of mixing and recreating in his fashion drawings all the most disparate styles of his time, from Cubism to the stylisation of faces and eyes typical of Modigliani's work. In this paper, however, we explore a little-known – and thus a rare and precious – aspect of his output: his activity as a draughtsman. The pictures presented here, their main focus being on the sky, reveal his unexpected talent as a landscape artist sensitive to changes in the atmosphere, his fluid style inspired by the lowering skies over the beaches on the Atlantic and Channel coasts, where clouds appear to invade every available space on his sheet of paper. These charming watercolours, so sophisticated in their refinement, should not be seen as mere preparatory studies but as fully-fledged paintings in their own right tasked with conveying the artist's most intimate nature: veritable insights into his soul that were never intended for public display but were restricted to a purely private dimension.
