About the Item

Title: French Village Street Church Tower Architecture Ink Drawing Bernard Labbe Artist: Bernard Labbe (French, mid 20th century) Medium: ink on paper, unframed Size: 16.25 x 13 inches (height x width) Signed: not signed Stamp: stamped verso Condition: good overall condition with light handling marks and minor edge wear, consistent with age; perforated sketchbook edge visible. Provenance: the artists atelier/ studio, France (stamped verso) Description: A striking architectural ink drawing by Bernard Labbe depicting a narrow French village street dominated by a church tower. The composition leads the viewer’s eye down a quiet lane framed by tall buildings, opening onto a finely detailed stone tower crowned with a steep roof and cross finial. Executed entirely in ink, the work highlights Labbe’s confident draughtsmanship and understanding of perspective. The buildings are constructed with precise linear work, while delicate cross-hatching and varied line weight create depth, shadow, and texture. The contrast between the open, light-filled foreground and the intricate architectural detailing of the tower gives the scene both structure and atmosphere. A small solitary figure adds a sense of scale and quiet human presence. This piece is particularly appealing for collectors of French architectural studies, church scenes, and works on paper that emphasise line and composition. The sketchbook origin further enhances its charm, offering a glimpse into the artist’s observational practice and on-location studies. Bernard Labbe (French). The artist was based around the Laval and L'Huisserie, Mayenne, areas in the Pays de Loire. Many items in this collection bear his atelier stamp and were bound in sketch books (some have the bound edge still showing the serrations from where they were removed and can be seen in photographs if present). Labbe exhibited at Société des Artistes Indépendants since 1951, Painter of the Centre de Liaison des Artistes Paris since 1982, appeared in L'Annuaire National des Beaux-Art since 1970 (French, German and American editions). Most of his exhibitions were in the 1980's, including Paris, Barcelona, Brussels, New York, Deauville, Aix en Provence, Arles, Avignon, and Marseille. A refined and characterful example of Labbe’s work, ideal for collectors of French village architecture, ecclesiastical scenes, and mid-century European ink drawings.
