The composition depicts an open, undulating landscape bordered by groups of mature trees, with a winding river or stream passing through the foreground and continuing towards the distant horizon. Labbe constructs the scene through a combination of fluid washes and energetic linear drawing. Fine black ink outlines trace the irregular contours of the land, while loosely worked marks describe branches, foliage and grasses. The trees are especially expressive, their canopies built from repeated looping and stippled lines that give the landscape a lively, animated quality. The blue paper plays an important role in the composition, functioning both as the colour of the sky and as a cool undertone throughout the landscape. Layered passages of grey, green and pale blue watercolour are applied over the surface, while touches of white and yellow coloured pencil create highlights across the banks and vegetation. These brighter accents suggest reflected light and introduce subtle warmth into the otherwise restrained palette. Rather than presenting a precisely observed topographical view, Labbe reduces the countryside into rhythmic bands of water, earth and vegetation. The curved outlines of the foreground banks lead the eye gradually through the composition, while the tall trees positioned on either side form a natural frame around the open central distance. This balance between detailed draughtsmanship and simplified forms gives the work both decorative appeal and a distinctly modern character. Bernard Labbe was based around Laval and L’Huisserie in the Mayenne area of the Pays de la Loire. He exhibited at the Société des Artistes Indépendants from 1951 and was associated with the Centre de Liaison des Artistes Paris from 1982. His work appeared in French, German and American editions of L’Annuaire National des Beaux Arts, and he exhibited in Paris, Barcelona, Brussels, New York, Deauville, Aix en Provence, Arles, Avignon and Marseille. The artist’s atelier stamp on the reverse provides direct provenance from Labbe’s studio. An appealing original work for collectors of French landscapes, woodland scenes, riverside subjects and mid century works on paper.
