About the Item

Watercolor on paper by the American artist, Norman MacLeish. Signed lower right and dated 1955. Condition: good. There is a brown watercolor dash in the right sky. It is not a foxing spot. See second to last photo. Very, very light foxing in parts of sky. Not noticeable. Titled verso. Overall framed in black and gold frame with off white mat board 18 by 21 inches. Norman MacLeish 1890-1975 Norman MacLeish was born on August 29, 1890, in Glencoe Illinois, to wealthy parents and became a painter and graphic artist. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and with Pierre Vignal in Paris. MacLeish was a member of the Chicago Society of Artists and exhibited at several venues including the Art Institute of Chicago, the World’s Fair of New York in 1939, the Corcoran Gallery biennial in 1941 and the Golden Gate Exposition of San Francisco in 1939. He was a supervisor for the Works Progress Administration in Chicago. At some point during his career, MacLeish moved to Florida and became involved with the Saint Augustine artist colony. He helped found the St. Augustine Arts Center, which is no longer in existence. MacLeish’s works can be found in the permanent collections of the Detroit Institute of Art and the Lightner Museum in Saint Augustine, Florida. MacLeish died in August of 1975 in Naples, Florida.

Original miniature watercolor and gouache coastal sunset on archival paper by the Vermont artist, Susanne Peck. Signed lower left “S Peck”. Condition is excellent. Circa 2015. The artwork is housed in a contemporary gold frame in fine condition. Overall framed measurements are 6.5 by 8.5 inches. Standup easel back frame. Under glass. Provenance: A Sarasota, Florida collector. Susanne Peck spent most of her professional life in the NYC area and relocated to Vermont in 2008. A classical singer, educator and conductor, she has always made art and has been drawing commissioned portraits for nearly 30 years. Largely self-taught and inspired by Renaissance draughtsmanship and drawing throughout the ages, her most valued instruction came privately from Elizabeth Steig in the Boston area, from portrait painter Laurel Stern Boeck at Katonah Art Center in New York, from Tad Spurgeon, Richard Weinstein and Mary Lower at the Middlebury Studio School. Ms Peck has taught clay and drawing/painting to children and adults at Katonah Art Center, Frog Hollow and Middlebury Studio School in Vermont.
