Description: Original pastel landscape by Pierre Neveu French b 1929 depicting a winding Provençal road bordered by olive trees and cypress, set against a dramatic mountain ridge. The composition is built around the sweeping curve of the pale road which draws the viewer forward into the landscape. Olive trees punctuate the foreground, their loose, gestural forms contrasting with the vertical rhythm of dark cypress trees rising through the middle ground. The distant mountain ridge, reminiscent of the limestone formations of southern France, anchors the horizon beneath a vibrant blue sky. Neveu uses layered pastel strokes to build depth and movement, combining soft blended areas with sharper linear accents. The interplay between cool blues and greens and warmer earth tones creates a sense of Mediterranean light and space. The perspective and rhythm of the road give the work a dynamic energy not always present in more static village scenes. Although not inscribed with a specific location, the subject strongly evokes inland Provence, a region long favoured by twentieth century French painters for its distinctive light, cypress lined roads and rugged mountain backdrops. Pierre Neveu began his studies at the École Boulle in Paris before continuing at the National School of Fine Arts and the Studio of Maurice Brianchon. He later became Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris in 1953. His work centres on compositional structure developed into vibrant colour harmonies. He exhibited widely in France including at the Salon dAutomne and the Salon of French Artists where he later became President of the painting section and was awarded the Gold Medal in 1994. His landscapes of southern France demonstrate a balance between disciplined draftsmanship and expressive colour handling. Artist Comments
Bright strokes of green highlight a sun-baked landscape in Provence, France. The winding path stretches through the summer field. Energetic dabs of a palette knife create texture and depth. The sky, painted in a rich blue, contrasts with the greenery, giving the painting a lively and dynamic feel.
