Provenance: All the paintings we have by this artist have come from the artist's estate. Description: This watercolour by Maurice Mazeilie depicts a serene scene of a château nestled among trees. The artist uses warm tones to illustrate the château’s architectural details, contrasting with the cool shades of the surrounding foliage. Two figures can be seen making their way along the pathway leading into the scene, adding depth and invites the viewer into this peaceful landscape.  Maurice Mazeilie (French, 1924 - 2021): Mazeilie lived and worked in Montmartre, where he had a studio on the famous Place du Tertre. Place du Tertre, located just a stone’s throw away from the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur, is known for its vibrant community of artists and is considered one of the key locations in Montmartre's artistic history. Since the late 19th century, Montmartre has been a haven for artists, housing greats like Picasso and Modigliani, and providing inspiration with its scenic streets and bustling cafés. Place du Tertre and Montmartre Art Scene: Historical Significance: Place du Tertre became known as an artist's hub during the Belle Époque era, with painters such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, and Degas frequenting the area. By the 20th century, it became synonymous with art and creativity. Artist Colony: The square remains one of the few places in Paris where artists can publicly display and sell their works directly to tourists and collectors, keeping the artistic tradition alive. A French watercolour on paper landscape by Roger Decaux. The work is signed and dated (as yet undeciphered) bottom right. Presented in a wood frame with cut card mount. A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition.
