About the Item

"Scent" is an exercise in the beauty of near-invisibility, its pale Tadelakt plaster surface carved with large, overlapping floral forms that reveal themselves slowly — petals, fans, and rounded blooms pressed into the ground in low relief, visible only through the subtle play of shadow across the white-on-white surface. The rounded corners of the panel soften the composition further, and the flowers themselves feel less botanical than architectural, their forms echoing the decorative tilework and carved plasterwork of the Moroccan tradition from which the medium originates. It is a work that rewards patience and changing light, the design appearing and receding depending on how you look — present but never insistent, like a fragrance just caught in the air. Dawn Bassett’s journey into the world of fine art is anything but conventional. Raised in the remote mountains, far from artistic influences, the idea of a career in the arts seemed distant—almost like a walk on the moon. She didn’t attend art school or follow a traditional path into fine art. Yet, from a young age, Dawn’s vivid imagination and innate creativity have been integral to her identity. A largely self-taught artist, Dawn has spent nearly two decades refining her craft, particularly in the ancient art of architectural plaster. Through global residencies and focused explorations, she has developed innovative techniques, including her mastery of Moroccan Tadelakt, a 2,000-year-old medium. In her hands, this timeless material transcends its architectural roots, becoming a modern language for storytelling, rich in texture and depth. Her work is a testament to her commitment to unlocking the secrets of this ancient craft, transforming it into a new artistic expression.
