About the Item

Artist Comments
A cheetah walks along the edge of a sloping green geometric plane. A yellow-green background frames the figure, drawing attention to its spotted coat. At the side, a leaf-like detail curls upward, contrasting with the flat colors and shapes throughout the composition. Artist Heejin Sutton studies and observes each animal to capture its unique qualities, expressing a sense of affection and attention to its individuality. Traditional Korean Jangji paper and mineral pigments create a subtle richness in the background.

About the Artist
Artist Heejin Sutton creates surreal compositions where detailed animals, fruit, and sea life appear within expansive fields of color and geometric forms. "I am drawn to the quiet individuality that exists within all living things," says Heejin. She began drawing as a child, finding comfort and connection through art during a difficult early period in her life. She later studied Oriental painting in South Korea and continued her exploration of art's emotional impact through graduate studies in art therapy. Her work reflects this journey, using traditional Korean materials such as hanji (mulberry paper) and mineral pigments to build layered surfaces where each color interacts with those beneath it. By placing small subjects within simplified backgrounds, Heejin creates spaces that encourage viewers to slow down, notice subtle differences, and reflect on the uniqueness of each being. Today, she works from a small corner studio in her home in Cumming, Georgia, creating whenever she finds a moment between caring for her family and teaching art.

Artist Comments
The world that I live in is uncertain, unstable, but I have to keep going and find something that can comfort me. This work is talking about the uncomfortable moment, but hopeful future, at the same time. This piece is made by layering Korean mulberry paper on a wooden panel with homemade flour glue. Then I apply a glue base. Next, I draw my sketch, and trace it on the paper. Then I paint three or four layers of a background color using pigments and glue base. Lastly, I paint the animal subject in fine detail, which takes most of time. The painting is on a cradled wood panel with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.

About the Artist
Heejin has been been drawing for as long as she can remember. She grew up with a serious illness and spent much of her childhood in the hospital. Drawing served as an outlet for her, bringing her peace and distraction. Heejin says there was no doubt as she grew up that she wanted to be an artist. She studied oriental painting extensively as a college student in South Korea and then went on to study art therapy in graduate school.
