Created in 1991, this expressive figurative drawing by Menachem Gueffen depicts two stylized characters: a seated crowned figure and a younger harlequin-like character dressed in a geometric diamond-pattern costume. A ladder rises behind them, introducing a symbolic and theatrical dimension that enriches the narrative quality of the composition.
Executed in ink and pastel on paper, the work features a vibrant palette of pinks, purples, turquoise blues and warm orange accents. Energetic ink contours interact with luminous pastel passages, creating a dynamic balance between drawing and painterly expression. The geometric treatment of the figures reflects Gueffen’s long-standing interest in modernist structure, while retaining the emotional intensity associated with figurative expressionism.
This drawing exemplifies the importance of draftsmanship within the artist’s practice. The composition combines theatrical imagery, symbolic characters and expressive color, themes that recur throughout Gueffen’s body of work. Its refined palette and strong graphic presence make it particularly appealing to collectors of modern figurative art, expressionist drawing and late twentieth-century works on paper. The piece also offers strong decorative appeal for contemporary interiors, design projects and curated art collections.
