About the Item

Monica DeSalvo’s “The Bystanders” is a 19 x 25 inch abstract collage on paper on 3 monotypes arranged in an arced composition. Overhapped prints with red, yellow, blue, dark green, purple, and white are interspersed with black and white collage elements. The left and center panels were printed on a 1950s mimeographed syllabus and handwritten notes with blue ink once belonging to the artist’s late father. The right panel is on printmaking paper. The black and white figurative elements come from Desalvo’s father’s engineering textbooks. The monotypes were created with a Gelli plate with acrylic paint, and its textures were derived from twine, burlap, and cut paper. Colored pencil was used to accent some of the shapes. The entire collage is on heavy archival paper. The signature is below the image.
