About the Item

Hand-painted round profile portrait from Natasha Lelenco’s Currency Series, featuring French text, vibrant fuchsia color and contemporary coin-inspired imagery. This unique acrylic painting belongs to Natasha Lelenco’s ongoing Currency Series, a body of work that reimagines the visual language of coins to explore questions of identity, migration, memory and symbolic value. Painted by hand on a circular wooden panel, the work transforms the format of official currency into a contemporary profile portrait where personal experience replaces institutional authority and anonymous lives become worthy of commemoration. The composition presents the profile of a woman rendered in muted green tones against an intense fuchsia background. Encircling the figure appears the French inscription “Tout ce que j’ai vécu doit compter pour quelque chose” (“Everything I have lived through must count for something”), a statement that turns the artwork into both a portrait and a declaration of resilience, dignity and accumulated experience. The circular format reinforces the visual association with coins and medals while simultaneously questioning who is represented, remembered and assigned value within social systems. Like all works in the Currency Series, this round painting functions as a contemporary counter-monument. Rather than depicting political leaders, monarchs or national heroes, Natasha Lelenco places ordinary individuals at the center of the image, highlighting stories that often remain absent from official narratives. The combination of graphic simplicity, intense color and text-based intervention creates a powerful balance between personal testimony and collective reflection. The artwork is hand-painted in acrylic on treated pine wood and possesses a subtle sculptural presence due to its circular format and depth. It can be displayed individually as a statement piece or combined with other works from the Currency Series to create larger wall installations and constellations of portraits. A defining aspect of the Currency Series is its conceptual economy. Each work exists simultaneously as an original painting and as a reflection on the mechanisms through which value is created, exchanged and accumulated. Through this project, Lelenco invites viewers to reconsider the relationship between identity, labor, memory and symbolic worth.
