Catalog Raisonne: Paul Marechal: Andy Warhol: The Complete Commissioned Record Covers (Prestel). Further Background & History: Warhol became the Velvet Underground’s manager in 1966 after seeing them perform in Greenwich Village and then brought German born singer Nico to the table. Warhol designed the cover as a self standing artwork and this is marked by Warhol’s very noticeable printed hand signature. In dissociating the concept of the artwork from the band itself & achieving wide distribution, Warhol created something revolutionary in nature. Says, Warhol scholar Paul Marechal, “After sublimating an everyday object, he then reintroduced it into daily life through a vehicle accessible to all, the record. Perhaps Warhol wanted to be as well-known as Coca-Cola.” The original album cover allowed fans to peel back the banana skin as a sticker, revealing the fruit of a nude-colored banana underneath. The sexually-charged effect was challenging for manufacturers to first pull off (the time it took to perfect the peel was partly the reason the album’s original release was delayed), but MGM deemed it necessary, since Warhol’s visual presence opened unprecedented doors. _ Please find additional works along these lines from Jean Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring & Roy Lichtenstein now live on our 1stDibs gallery

Andy Warhol record art: Further Background: In the late 1950s, as the record industry began to expand at an extraordinary rate, Warhol was hired by both Columbia and RCA Records on a freelance basis to create album covers and promotional content and, from there, carried the skill throughout his career. When Warhol arrived in New York he met with his schoolmate George Klauber who was, at the time, working for a creative agency run by Will Burtin. Klauber did Warhol a favour and introduced him to Burtin and the opportunity to work with Columbia’s, and later RCA’s, art director Robert M. Jones. Robert M. Jones remembered it fondly and suggested that the commissions may have been his first: “I gave him three little spots to do for the corners of the standard albums. He needed money...

The Velvet Underground & Nico The Velvet Underground & Nico Produced by Andy Warhol, Unripened, 2007 Vinyl, LP Label: Not On Label (The Velvet Underground) Country: Sweden Cover art designed by Andy Warhol Dimensions: 12 x 12 inches (30.48 x 30.48). Both the record and cover are in very good overall vintage condition. Well suited for framing. Though The Velvet Underground existed for less than three years with its original members, it is considered to be not just the ‘ultimate New York band’ but also the most influential group ever. Artists who have acknowledged such influence include David Bowie, The Sex Pistols, Patti Smith, Joy Division and Nirvana. Witts places the band and its genesis in the cultural context of Manhattan’s beatnik bohemianism, its radical artistic environment, and the city’s negative reaction to California’s ‘Hippie’ counterculture. Lou Reed’s song factory background is also considered, while his Primitives (1964-5) and Velvet Underground songs (1965-70) are examined within the stylistic context of rock music. The band’s sound world is likewise considered in this light. John Cale’s experimental contribution is assessed, especially his work for LaMonte Young (The Theatre of Eternal Music) and what he carried from that experience into the Velvet’s sound. The visual artist Andy Warhol became the band’s manager and producer in 1965. He placed his ‘superstar’ Nico in the line-up (which already included a female drummer). The radical nature of the group’s Warhol period performances are examined, together with those aspects related to issues of gender, sexuality and drugs culture...
