About the Item

Letter addressed to Mino Maccari. Fagnano, 14 May 1933. "The promise of Ansaldo". During his pre journalistic period, the wannabe novelist Benedetti used to use the stage name of Arrigo, (born Giulio), only for an aesthetic choice and not to avoid confusion with Giulio de Benedetti, director of La Stampa. He is interested in literature and wants to work as a literary man. For that reason, he wrote to Mino Maccari, a famous engraver and journalist, director since '26 of the “Selvaggio” of Colle Val d’Elsa (a regime magazine firstly that would later become a political satire magazine), asking for writing tips and a "possible job". As a unique perspective, at that moment Benedetti has only "the promise of Ansaldo" (which was the signature of the anti-fascist press and later become director of the "Telegraph" in Livorno by binding to the Ciano family), to become editor of the "Lavoro" of Genoa. In the yard he has a volume of two long stories for which he has "boring doubts". That was "Tempi di Guerra", published the same year, in 1933, by Maccari at the "Selvaggio". Benedetti writes: "Probably, I'll end working as a journalist in the end. Eventually, I would avoid it." And indeed he will. This long distraction, for what he felt "prisoner for life" is his journalistic career. And then he will just follow the steps outlined in this seer letter of 1933. In 1937 he finally leaves the university and "the boring atmosphere of Lucca". He arrives in Rome, called by his childhood friend Pannunzio. They worked together as proofreaders for Longanesi (called "carciofino sott'odio" for his brutal comments) at "Omnibus". Following Longanesi's lessons, Benedetti will create the modern magazine: he will become director of "Oggi", founder and director of the "European" and director of the "Espresso", and teacher of many journalists.
