About the Item

Frankenthal Porcelain Plate. 18th Century Floral Decoration with Woven Relief lip. Diameter 34.5 cm. Large hard-paste porcelain plate from Frankenthal with shaped border decorated in raised relief imitating woven wickerwork, a model known in 18th century German porcelain as “Neuosier”. Polychrome floral decoration with a central bouquet in purple, blue, green and orange tones, accompanied by scattered floral sprigs around the rim. Diameter: 34.5 cm. Blue underglaze crowned mark to the reverse attributable to the Frankenthal manufactory during the Electoral Palatinate period. Painted blue numeral “5” and incised “C2” mark under the glaze, probably linked to internal production or model control. An old antique dealer’s label attached to the reverse describes the piece as having a “polychrome floral decoration with the characteristic violet colour of the factory”. Founded in 1755 in the Rhine Palatinate by Paul Hannong, previously associated with the Strasbourg ceramic tradition, the Frankenthal manufactory became one of the leading German porcelain factories of the 18th century and remained active exclusively until 1799, under the patronage of Elector Carl Theodor. The woven basket-weave border relief derives from Meissen models and became widely used in aristocratic table services during the second half of the 18th century. Good overall condition with wear, minute firing impurities and small kiln specks in the paste and glaze, consistent with later Frankenthal production of the second half of the 18th century.
