About the Item

Damien Hirst, The Currency 9714. No Way Out, 2016 (With original HENI Frame) Enamel paint, handmade paper, watermark, microdot, hologram, pencil 20 x 30 cm Hand-signed on the reverse The Currency, launched in July 2021, is a collection of 10,000 NFTs which correspond with 10,000 original artworks by Damien Hirst. Collectors were given the choice to either keep the NFT or exchange it for the physical artwork. Every choice made – to keep the NFT, or keep the painting – had consequences. Collectors that chose to claim a physical artwork had to burn their NFT to do so. Similarly, those who chose to keep their NFT did so knowing that the physical artwork would then be destroyed. The exchange period closed on 27 July 2022 resulting in just over half the collectors (5,149) deciding to keep the physical artwork, and 4,851 to keep the NFT. Damien Hirst British art phenomenon Damien Hirst shot to fame after winning the Turner Prize in 1995. One of the YBAs (Young British Artists), who dominated the UK art scene during the 1990s, Hirst has always been contentious, impressing and shocking the art world in equal measure with his provocative approach. His varied work explores the complex threads of relation between art, religion, science, life and death. Hirst works across diverse media, creating sculpture, installation, painting and prints. From diamond encrusted skulls to giant pills, colourful spot paintings to the life-and-death of butterflies, Hirst’s work might divide opinion, but one thing remains a constant: every piece is unforgettable. In his own words: “Great art or good art, is when you look at it, experience it and it stays in your mind. I don’t think conceptual art and traditional art are all that different.”

In the nearly quarter of a century since that pivotal show (which would come to define the Young British Artists), Hirst has become one of the most influential artists of his generation. His groundbreaking works include The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991), a shark in formaldehyde; Mother and Child Divided (1993) a four-part sculpture of a bisected cow and calf; and For the Love of God (2007), a human skull studded with 8,601 diamonds.
