About the Item

ÆRENA Galleries & Gardens is delighted to unveil the newest paintings by California landscape painter, Doug Smith. Known for his unique depictions of agrarian landscapes, Smith has long been fascinated by the vast mosaics of the archetypal American West. The inspired, stunning paintings blend aerial landscapes, Smith’s experience in graphic design, and a traditional detailed vignette showing a peek into pastoral American life. With vivid planes of color and an attention to refined geometric composition, Smith’s paintings are an intimate mix between abstract expressionism and a small dash of realistic landscape painting, inspired by long flights over the country and even longer drives through it. The inclusion of weathered barns and silos, wraparound porches, and rustic windmills transport the viewer to idyllic and familiar scenes reminiscent of travels through the Western and Midwestern United States. Artist Biography With a clear nod to the San Francisco Bay Area figurative movement that flourished during his mid-century youth, Doug Smith combines the exuberance of abstract expressionism with the arresting intimacy of the realistically familiar. Traditional farmhouses and weathered barns punctuate his vast planes of color, line and texture. From the endless agrarian mosaics one might observe from an airplane and the archetypical homesteads that appear mostly in memory, Smith’s compositions evoke the enduring binaries characterized by the American West: boundless optimism and wistful nostalgia; nature’s randomness and man’s ordered domesticity. Born in San Francisco, Smith draws on the aesthetic popularized by Richard Diebenkorn and Elmer Bischoff of the Bay Area School, as well as the reassuring rural imagery of American Regionalism. His work has been exhibited at galleries and museums throughout the United States and world and is in the permanent collections of the Rockwell Museum in New York and the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Georgia, among others.
