About the Item

Artist: Eduardo Arranz-Bravo (Barcelona, 1941 – 2023) Title: Woman, Man’s Head, Two Pears and Orange Background Year: 1967 Medium: Oil on canvas (with drawing) Dimensions: 97 × 130 cm Framing: Unframed Signature: Signed and dated “Arranz-Bravo 67” Executed in 1967, this large-scale oil painting by Eduardo Arranz-Bravo belongs to one of the most significant and sought-after periods of the artist’s career. Created during the vibrant decade of the 1960s, the work captures the bold psychological intensity and symbolic freedom that defined Spanish post-war figurative modernism. The composition presents a powerful interplay of human forms and surreal elements, set against a striking orange background. The dynamic gestures, layered drawing within paint, and expressive chromatic contrasts reflect the artist’s distinctive visual language developed during this pivotal decade. Works from this period reveal Arranz-Bravo at his most experimental and intellectually ambitious. Eduardo Arranz-Bravo (Barcelona, 1941–2023) is widely recognized as a leading figure of European post-war figuration. His works are represented in major museum collections and have been exhibited internationally, consolidating his position within the broader narrative of 20th-century Spanish modern art. Large-scale paintings from the 1960s rarely appear on the international market, particularly examples that are signed and dated by the artist. This museum-scale work offers both visual impact and historical relevance, making it equally compelling for collectors of post-war European art and for refined contemporary interiors. Signed and dated “Arranz-Bravo 67”. Unframed. Certificate of Authenticity issued by Galería Sastre, Spain. In the 1960s, Arranz-Bravo developed a highly distinctive visual language, positioned between the psychological intensity of Francis Bacon, the symbolic freedom of Joan Miró, the surreal narrative spirit of Salvador Dalí, and the bold chromatic impact later associated with Jean-Michel Basquiat. Works from this period are now especially sought after by international collectors and institutions focused on post-war European figuration. The composition features a monumental female figure, a ghost-like male head and two floating pears, recurring motifs in the artist’s iconography, charged with eroticism, irony and existential tension. The vibrant orange background envelops the scene in a theatrical atmosphere, giving the painting exceptional visual presence. About the artist Eduardo Arranz-Bravo is widely regarded as one of the leading figures of Spanish contemporary art. He exhibited internationally from an early age in Paris, Amsterdam, New York and São Paulo, and his works are held in major institutional collections including the Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid), the MACBA, and the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, among others. His market has grown steadily over the past decade, with particular demand for paintings from the 1960s and 1970s, considered his most influential and museum-level period. Why this work matters Key year: 1967, the artist’s golden era. Large scale with strong visual impact. Classic Arranz-Bravo iconography. Highly representative of his most collectible period. Artist included in major international museum collections. A striking and historically significant work, ideal for collectors seeking a distinctive, character-driven piece with long-term cultural and market relevance. An important early example of Arranz-Bravo’s mature 1960s language.” “A striking statement piece with strong decorative and architectural presence.” “An investment-grade work from a key period in Spanish modern art.” “A rare opportunity to acquire a large 1960s composition by this museum-collected artist.” “Ideal for collectors of European post-war figuration and design-driven interiors.” Comparable 1960s works by the artist have shown consistent demand among European collectors.

Mid Century Expressionist Portrait Oil Painting Catalan Barcelona Taüll School

Mid Century Expressionist Portrait Oil Painting Catalan Barcelona Taüll School

By Jaume Muxart Domenech

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Expressionist Neofigurative Portrait Oil Painting Catalan Taüll Group School Artist: Jaume Muxart Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 61 × 50 cm (24 × 19.7 in) Signature: Signed lower right Frame: Unframed Condition: Very good condition. Stable paint surface with original impasto visible Origin: Spain Period: Mid-20th century DESCRIPTION Expressive neofigurative portrait by Catalan painter Jaume Muxart, a founding member of the influential Taüll Group and a key figure in the renewal of Spanish postwar painting. The composition presents a frontal stylized head structured through bold chromatic contrasts and gestural brushwork. A strong vertical axis divides the face into two emotional registers, creating psychological intensity while reinforcing the structural rhythm of the composition. The interaction between white tonal fields and passages of cobalt blue, magenta and grey reveals the material sensitivity characteristic of Muxart’s mature neofigurative language. The textured surface preserves the physical presence of the brushstroke and reinforces the expressive tension of the figure. Portraits of this type represent one of the most recognizable directions within the artist’s production and reflect the broader evolution of European postwar figurative expression. This work belongs to the Catalan postwar neofigurative movement associated with artists such as Antoni Tàpies, Modest Cuixart and Josep Guinovart, with whom Muxart shared the experimental environment of the Taüll Group. Its expressive treatment of the human figure also connects with the wider European postwar tradition developed by Jean Dubuffet and Karel Appel, where gesture and material structure replace descriptive realism. Jaume Muxart (Martorell, 1922 – Barcelona, 2019) was a Catalan painter and founding member of the Taüll Group, alongside Antoni Tàpies, Modest Cuixart and Josep Guinovart, one of the most influential collectives in the renewal of Spanish postwar painting. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and later worked in Paris during the formative years of his career. He represented Spain at the São Paulo Biennial and developed an important international exhibition trajectory. Muxart also served as professor and dean at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona and remains recognized as a key figure within Catalan neofigurative painting of the twentieth century. Edward Marecak Semi-Abstract Mythological Oil Painting Modernist Figures

Edward Marecak Semi-Abstract Mythological Oil Painting Modernist Figures

By Edward Marecak

Located in Denver, CO

A bold and highly collectible mid-century modern oil painting by Edward Marecak, this semi-abstract mythological composition exemplifies the artist’s signature fusion of classical narrative, symbolic figuration, and vibrant modernist abstraction. Rendered in richly layered oil, the painting transforms ancient mythological subject matter into a dynamic, color-saturated visual language. Stylized human figures emerge through bold outlines, patterned surfaces, and interlocking color fields, creating a composition that feels both narrative and abstract at once. Marecak’s approach is deeply rooted in his Slovak heritage and fascination with folklore, opera, and Greek mythology, which he consistently reinterpreted through a modernist lens. Rather than depicting literal scenes, he constructs symbolic environments where figures, gestures, and architectural forms merge into a rhythmic, mosaic-like structure. The result is a visually complex and emotionally charged work that reflects Marecak’s position as one of Colorado’s most distinctive mid-century modernists. His practice bridges folk-inspired imagery, surrealist abstraction, and postwar expressionism, placing him firmly within the broader evolution of American modern art. Mythological works such as this are among the most sought-after in Marecak’s oeuvre, as they represent his most fully realized synthesis of storytelling and abstraction. These compositions often feature densely layered surfaces, bold chromatic contrasts, and theatrical figuration that echoes both Byzantine iconography and modernist experimentation. A long-standing figure in the Denver modern...
