About the Item

This abstract painting by German artist Ferdinand Spindel exemplifies post-war European abstraction, where texture is as important as colour and composition. Dark linear contours weave through the composition, partially defining the organic forms while simultaneously emphasizing the physical structure of the layered surface. Built around a restrained palette of soft greys, off-whites, muted blues, and earthy brown-red accents, the composition unfolds through irregular organic forms that appear to emerge from the richly layered surface. Rather than defining space through perspective, Spindel creates depth through successive layers of paint and collage materials, producing a tactile surface. The relief-like structure catches the light differently across the composition, allowing the work to shift subtly with its surroundings. Created before Spindel turned his attention to polyurethane foam, this collage belongs to the period immediately preceding the sculptures for which he later became best known. Works from this transitional period are less frequently encountered than his later foam sculptures. Although abstraction remained central to his practice, his 'early' works demonstrate a remarkable sensitivity to surface, balance, and the expressive potential of texture. Ferdinand Spindel (1923–1980) was a German artist and graphic designer based in Essen. After establishing himself as an independent artist in the late 1940s, he travelled to Berlin and Paris, where he encountered the experimental currents of post-war European art. During the following decades he gained international attention for his innovative reliefs made from polyurethane foam, a development during which many of his earlier paintings and collages were repurposed or no longer preserved. The artwork is signed on both the front and reverse and is titled and dated Collage 1963. It is presented in excellent condition, framed, and ready to hang.
