About the Item

Françoise Sullivan (b. 1923) is a trailblazing force in Canadian art, recognized not only for her groundbreaking work in modern dance but also for her prolific and versatile contributions across multiple disciplines, including painting, sculpture, and photography. Sullivan began her career in the 1940s as a modern dancer, studying with renowned choreographers in New York before returning to Montreal towards the end of the decade. Upon her return, she became deeply involved with Les Automatistes and was a signator on the group's radical and revolutionary Refus Global manifesto. With a multidisciplinary skillset, Sullivan seamlessly blends her diverse expertise into her visual artwork, creating vibrant, rhythmic compositions that embody the spontaneity of the Automatistes and the dynamic energy of her dance background. The artist was first introduced to pastels during a 1996 trip to Greece. Attracted to the magnificent physicality and texture of the medium, she went on to create hundreds of drawings before the end of the decade. This untitled work exemplifies Sullivan's exceptional command of pastels, showcasing her dynamic, rapid line work and the intensity of her colors. The composition is divided into vertical cobalt planes that pulse with frenetic, back-and-forth strokes, evoking a sense of movement and energy. A crimson crack cuts through the center of the work, introducing a striking contrast and palpable tension that ripples through the sheet. In 2023, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts hosted, "I Let Rhythms Flow," a major exhibition celebrating Sullivan's 100th birthday. Today, her work is featured in museums across Canada including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), and the Museum of Contemporary Art (Montreal).
