About the Item

Title Abstract Architectural Forms French Modernist Charcoal Drawing Artist Jacqueline Boisselot French late 20th century Medium Charcoal on artist paper unframed Size 19.75 x 25.75 Height x width in inches Signature Unsigned Provenance Private collection Paris Condition Good overall condition with gentle surface undulation, light handling marks and minor age related toning around the sheet edges. There is faint charcoal transfer and surface marking visible verso, consistent with the medium and studio storage. The composition remains clear and presents attractively. Description A dynamic abstract charcoal composition by Jacqueline Boisselot, constructed through overlapping rectangular planes, broken verticals and shifting areas of densely worked texture. Although non-figurative, the drawing carries a distinctly architectural quality, suggesting fragmented walls, windows, rooftops or the compressed forms of an urban interior. Boisselot builds the composition through repeated blocks of charcoal, allowing dark textured passages to alternate with broad areas of untouched paper. These contrasts create a lively visual rhythm and give the work a strong sense of movement across the sheet. Narrow vertical marks punctuate the arrangement, while angled forms and interrupted horizontal bands prevent the composition from becoming static. The image is particularly effective in the way it balances density and openness. The central and lower sections contain the greatest concentration of charcoal, with layered marks producing a rich, almost woven surface. Towards the upper and outer edges, the forms become more fragmented, allowing the pale paper to act as light and space within the composition. Rather than describing a recognisable scene, Boisselot reduces structure to its essential components of line, shape, texture and tone. Some passages recall façades, beams or overlapping architectural elevations, while others operate purely as abstract marks. This ambiguity gives the drawing a modern and interpretive character, allowing different readings to emerge with prolonged viewing. The charcoal has been applied with considerable variety. Some areas are softly rubbed and granular, while others retain sharper edges and more decisive directional strokes. The visible grain of the paper contributes to the overall texture, giving the surface a tactile quality and reinforcing the handmade nature of the work. From an interior perspective, this is a particularly versatile and contemporary piece. Its monochrome palette would work well in minimalist, industrial or modern interiors, where the graphic structure could provide interest without introducing competing colour. The generous landscape format would make it effective above a console table, desk or sideboard, while its layered composition would also sit comfortably within a curated gallery wall. Jacqueline Boisselot was a French artist active during the late 20th century, known for expressive figure studies, portraits, interiors, still lifes, landscapes and abstract compositions. Her work is characterised by confident handling, simplified forms and a sensitive approach to tone, structure and spatial balance.
