John Willenbecher was born in Pennsylvania and has lived in New York City for most of his life. In 1958, he graduated from Brown University with a BA and subsequently attended New York's University Institute of Fine Arts (1958-1961). His degrees were in art history and he is primarily considered a self-taught artist. Over the course of a long and distinguished career, Willenbecher has exhibited widely and with success. His works are held in numerous private and public collections including the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), the Guggenheim Museum (New York), the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among many others.
