About the Item

A strong presence work that is for a dramatic effect. The piece features the brushwork and nature of the enamel paint itself as the subject matter. The work has an intense feeling of motion and cascading direction. The white in the background is enamel paint in a very pure white color - super white - which creates space. His works are done on high quality stretchers and do not need to be framed. Zinsser places a strong emphasis on the materiality of paint itself which is enhanced by the monochromatic color range seen in our example. The fundamental element that defines this work shown is the exploration of the pure materiality of paint and the essence of color. this painting is striking and has a presence all its own. Zinsser, a devotee of postwar Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism for decades, finds inspiration for such works in New York City where he lives and paints. The artist has once been quoted as saying: I have always been attracted to colors as they exist in the world, rather than making imitative color. All of these colors have associations to observed experience—a garage door, the wall of a warehouse, the side of a truck. John Zinsser has exhibited extensively in Europe and the United States since 1980. His paintings are in the Richard Brown Baker Collection at Yale, the Sammlung Goetz in Munich, the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina, and in the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut.
