An intriguing and Gorgeous work by Julio Sendino entitled “Lateral Movement,” created using the water encaustic technique. An abstract and geometric composition that evokes balance, harmony, and solidity through its colors and structured forms. This painting will bring a vibrant and contemplative energy to any space. This work was a finalist in the 28th Reunart Fine Arts Exhibition in Valladolid, held in 2024. The piece embraces the duality of light and shadow in a play of contrasts and forms. The work plays with the perception of volume and two-dimensionality, leading to an open, spiritual, or even ritualistic interpretation, where each form seems to hold a hidden meaning. About Water-Based Encaustic Painting Water-based encaustic painting is a technique that uses beeswax as a binder, but instead of being applied hot as in traditional encaustic, it is emulsified in water using natural emulsifiers such as Marseille soap or borax. This allows for a stable paint paste to be obtained when mixed with pigments, without the need for heat or solvents. The resulting paint is applied cold to porous supports such as wood, cardboard, or prepared canvas, and upon drying, it produces a matte, velvety, and slightly water-resistant surface. Although it does not achieve the intensity of gloss or transparency of hot encaustic, it offers a very particular and natural texture. This technique has been revived by contemporary artists seeking sustainable and less toxic processes. Its main advantage lies in the combination of the strength and durability of wax with the accessibility of working cold, making it an attractive option both for its aesthetic appeal and its low environmental impact. Furthermore, since it requires neither heat nor solvents, it allows for a safer and more organic artistic experience, with unique finishes that reflect the materiality of the elements used. About Julio Sendino Julio Sendino is an artist from Valladolid whose training in drawing and painting has allowed him to develop his artistic work through diverse forms of expression, playing with the figurative and the abstract. Geometric abstraction is one of the currents of abstract art, which emerged around the 1920s and is based on the use of simple geometric shapes, which are combined in subjective compositions. It is also an exaltation of two-dimensionality and a critique of the efforts of artists in previous movements to represent a three-dimensional reality. Wassily Kandinsky is the most recognized and influential artist, followed by Malevich, Mondrian, and others.
