Katherine Bello is an American abstract painter whose work is informed by a unique intersection of science, memory, intuition, and formal experimentation. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Kansas in 1988 before later pursuing extensive studies in fine art and design at Johnson County Community College from 2006 to 2015. During this period, Bello developed the abstract visual language and sophisticated sensitivity to color that have become hallmarks of her practice. She subsequently continued her studies at the Kansas City Art Institute between 2014 and 2018.
Bello’s paintings are deeply influenced by light, landscape, poetry, history, and science, but also by the emotional and sensory fragments embedded within memory. Rather than working from predetermined compositions, she approaches painting as an open-ended process shaped by spontaneity, intuition, and discovery. Her abstract works frequently emerge from what she describes as “a place of unknowing,” allowing subconscious associations and personal recollections to guide the evolution of the image.
Central to Bello’s practice is the idea of “re-contextualizing personal nostalgia.” While her paintings avoid literal representation, they evoke remembered experiences through color relationships, gesture, movement, and atmosphere. Her process reflects a continuous exploration of formal boundaries, balancing structure with improvisation and emotional resonance with abstraction.
Bello views art not simply as an object created by the artist, but as an active relationship between artwork and viewer—one shaped through interpretation, lived experience, and perception. This openness gives her work a contemplative and highly personal dimension while remaining visually expansive and accessible.
