About the Item

At the heart of Macyn Bolt’s artistic practice is an interest in qualities of reflection, mirroring and contrasting perspectives that are unique to the space of abstract painting. With the dramatic and subtle properties of color, open and closed forms and interlocking shapes, the artist seeks to give voice to the complex, often contradictory nature of spatial comprehension. Employing reductive geometric imagery, the crosscurrents of illusionary and fixed spatial polarities ricochet off each other in search of a tentative equilibrium. That which is seen and that which is implied complicates that equation. There is evidence of more going on behind the surface than meets the eye, with the clues of it revealed on the edges and within unexpected locations. The paintings exist in the stillness of an immediate moment, but are also like doors waiting to be opened, teasing with a history to be discovered. Macyn Bolt is an American abstract painter who lives and works in Brooklyn, NY and upstate Pennsylvania. Using the visual language of geometric abstraction and architectural schemata, he explores the unique characteristics of color, space and form within a painting. His work embraces both sculptural illusion and its opposite to create a dynamic visual tension and resolution. Bolt received a BFA from Calvin College and an MFA from Syracuse University and has exhibited his work nationally in solo and group shows, including the 39th Biennial Exhibition of Contemporary Painting, at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC in 1985, I-Space in Chicago, Illinois in 2002, and, most recently, Twisted Logic – Paintings by Macyn Bolt, at the Sussex Community College in Newton, New Jersey. He received a Michigan Council for the Arts grant and two Pollack Krasner grants and his work is included in numerous international private and public collections, including the Newark Museum, The Blanton Museum of Art and The Grand Rapids Art Museum. Macyn Bolt’s artwork has been reviewed in the New York Times, Art in America, Arts Magazine, and chronicled in various exhibition catalogues for gallery and museum exhibitions.

Blue Minimalist Oil on Canvas, Signed, and dated 1976 N.Y. , Unframed

Blue Minimalist Oil on Canvas, Signed, and dated 1976 N.Y. , Unframed

Located in Genève, GE

A striking large-scale minimalist composition by Benna CHU, signed and dated “1976 N.Y.” on the reverse. Executed in acrylic on canvas, this elegant work exemplifies the artist’s refined exploration of color, space, and perception. The composition is built upon a powerful yet deceptively simple visual dialogue between an intense field of luminous blue and a sharply defined white geometric form. Positioned against the vibrant monochromatic ground, the white shape appears to hover within the pictorial space, creating a subtle tension between presence and absence, materiality and illusion. The work reflects the aesthetic concerns of Minimalism and Hard-Edge Abstraction that emerged in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s. Rather than relying on narrative or representation, Benna CHU focuses on the viewer’s direct visual experience, employing precision, scale, and chromatic contrast to produce a contemplative and immersive effect. Particularly remarkable is the handling of the blue field, whose saturated surface radiates light while simultaneously emphasizing the crisp contours of the white form. The lower edge of the white element, articulated through a rhythmic scalloped profile, introduces a subtle architectural and decorative quality that counterbalances the rigor of the overall composition. This delicate intervention transforms a seemingly reductive image into a highly sophisticated investigation of geometry and visual perception. Painted in New York in 1976, the work belongs to a period when minimalist and post-minimalist ideas were redefining contemporary art. Its monumental dimensions further reinforce its visual impact, allowing the composition to engage directly with the surrounding architectural space. Measuring 152 x 128 cm (59.8 x 50.4 inches), this painting possesses a strong museum-like presence and would be equally compelling in a contemporary collection, a modern architectural setting, or a carefully curated interior. Signed and dated on the reverse, the canvas remains a powerful example of late twentieth-century geometric abstraction, combining formal rigor with exceptional visual elegance.
