Enamel on emulsion-coated canvas in an original Plexiglas frame. Signed on the reverse ‘Schifano’ There is also an unidentified handwritten signature on the reverse. A pair is available This artwork is part of the "Paesaggi TV" (TV Landscapes) series by Italian artist Mario Schifano, created in the early 1970s. Enamel and often aniline (industrial dye) on emulsified canvas. Schifano photographed a television screen and transferred the captured still image onto a canvas prepared with photographic emulsion. He then intervened manually, applying vibrant, industrial enamel colors over the photographic base, often leaving the composition slightly blurred or out of focus. These works were frequently encased in a Perspex (Plexiglas) case, which enhances the artificial, "screen-like" quality of the piece. The "TV Landscapes" represent Schifano's transition from traditional painting to an exploration of mass media's influence on reality. The black, rounded border mimics the frame of a cathode-ray tube television, suggesting that our perception of nature and the world is constantly filtered through technology. By isolating a single frame from the "flow" of television and fixing it on canvas, Schifano transforms a fleeting, "fatuous" image into a permanent object of artistic contemplation. While influenced by American Pop Art, Schifano's approach is more gestural and critical, focusing on how information is translated and mediated rather than just celebrating consumer culture
