About the Item

A half moon shape flies across a mountainous landscape and inky ground in this complex and contemplative work on paper by Otto Rogers. Framed dimensions 39.5 x 31 inches. Otto Donald Rogers (1935-2019) taught at the University of Saskatchewan (1959-1988) after receiving his MA in Fine Art from the University of Wisconsin. In 1963, critic Clement Greenberg recognized Rogers as a “big attack” painter and his artwork, rooted in the traditions of cubism and constructivism, as having a “fullness of inspiration.” Rogers helped sustain the Emma Lake Workshops, a meeting place for some of North America’s leading artists including Barnett Newman, Jules Olitski and Rogers himself. Rogers’ work is held in more than 30 public collections including: the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. "There are few artists, very few, whose work has about it a kind of magic; they sing their own song. Otto Rogers is one of these special few. I love what he does." ~ Sir Anthony Caro

The vibrant colours—burnt orange, turquoise, black-a touch of green and the dynamic form of this inspired composition is quintessentially Otto Rogers. The modernist artist was masterful in his use of acrylic paints and his work reflected the natural beauty that surrounded his country studio. Saskatchewan born Rogers (1935-2019) was recognized by the NY art critic, Clement Greenberg as a ‘big attack’ painter early in his career and stated that his artwork showed a ‘fullness of inspiration.’ A devout follower of the Baha’i faith, Rogers did not view art as simply a ‘decorative thing.’ “Nature is God...
