About the Item

A towering storm cloud rises above a calm sea in this monochrome graphite maritime landscape drawing by Spanish artist Raúl Álvarez. Created in 2025 and titled Horizonte acuático IV—Aquatic Horizon IV—the work belongs to Álvarez’s Horizonte acuático series. Based on marine landscapes beneath heavily clouded skies, the series explores how subtle contrasts between greys can separate water, atmosphere and light while giving movement to an otherwise restrained composition. The unusually tall, narrow format determines the experience of the image. The horizon crosses the lower half of the composition, while an immense vertical cloud formation expands upwards through almost the entire sheet. Its accumulated volumes resemble a column built from vapour: dense and shadowed near the sea, increasingly luminous as it rises. Álvarez constructs the cloud through carefully modulated passages of pencil and water-soluble graphite. Soft tonal transitions describe its rounded masses, while darker graphite marks articulate the folds and internal turbulence of the atmosphere. Above it, diagonal bands radiate across the sky, intensifying the impression of upward movement and concentrating the viewer’s attention on the illuminated centre. The sea introduces a contrasting horizontal rhythm. Long graphite strokes and diluted washes describe reflections, currents and changes in the water’s surface without defining every detail. Light and shadow extend from the distant horizon towards the foreground, where the marks become broader, more fluid and increasingly abstract. The image therefore moves between meticulous observation and the physical immediacy of drawing. Although the composition is entirely monochromatic, its range of graphite greys creates a pronounced sense of depth. Pale passages suggest reflected light, while charcoal-like areas give weight to the cloud and water. The absence of color directs attention towards texture, luminosity and the changing density of the atmosphere. Within Raúl Álvarez’s practice, water frequently operates as both subject and pictorial problem: a shifting surface through which reflection, depth and movement can be examined. In Horizonte acuático IV, the relationship between sea and sky becomes almost architectural. The low horizon establishes stability, while the ascending cloud introduces energy, uncertainty and a sense of natural monumentality. Pencil and water-soluble graphite on paper mounted on wood, 2025. Unique work. Dimensions: 58 cm high × 19 cm wide × 1.5 cm deep (22.8 × 7.5 × 0.6 in). Signed on the front by the artist and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Casa das Peritas works directly with Raúl Álvarez and guarantees the authenticity and stated provenance of the artwork.
