About the Item

"Inset-Red" is a monochromatic abstract painting in oil and bronze pigment from 1980. The colored marks blend together in a mix of red, orange, brown, green, and black. 60" x 45" art Trained in Milwaukee during the peak of Modernism, Todd Boppel acquired a fascination with explorations in space, surface, and texture inspired by poetry, music, and landscapes. Later, he became a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, advising future artists both in and out of the classroom. "Inset Red" focuses on a pattern of carefully chosen colors spread across the entire composition. The subtle shifts in shade create visual interest which grows upon closer examination of the individual marks. His abstract explorations pull from Modernist traditions of self-critique, finding what is unique to the medium of painting. Here Boppel combines traditional oil paint with bronze pigment, exploring both expected and unexpected marks on a flat surface.
