About the Item

"Two Women on the Shore No. 6B" by Zachary Schomburg brings its stripes together in a broad inverted V — two groups of diagonal bands entering from the upper left and upper right, converging at the lower center to form an open triangular form with a sliver of bright teal visible at the very base where the two systems meet. Pink, navy, yellow, cream, green, and terracotta make up the palette, each band soaking into the raw canvas with a matte softness that keeps the bold geometry from feeling hard. The triangular negative space at the center reads as threshold, tent, or shelter — something you might walk into. Two Women on the Shore is a captivating new collection by Zachary Schomburg that reimagines Edvard Munch’s 1895 block print of the same name through a contemporary, expressive lens. Working in large-scale abstraction on raw canvas, Schomburg draws inspiration from the eight evocative colors in Munch’s original, using them as emotional anchors for his own visual language. Each piece unfolds through bold gestures and atmospheric shifts, offering a meditation on memory, presence, and the space between figures. Schomburg’s compositions blur the lines between subject and setting—where the essence of two women on a shoreline becomes a broader exploration of companionship, longing, and the slow pull of time. Rendered with a painterly sensitivity and a cinematic sense of stillness, this body of work invites viewers to experience both the echoes of Munch’s legacy and the immediacy of Schomburger’s vision. We invite you to see this striking collection in person and step into its quiet, resonant world.

Abstract. Vibrant. Painting. About the Artist: "I contemplate every color, mark, and placement of the line to formulate what I call rhythmic velocities: relationships of color and motion that give life to the composition, creating a heartbeat. I am interested in the duality of math and design: through repetition, a line made of color becomes a rhythmic pattern. This concept is found when composing music, organic landscapes and architectural structures. By referencing these sources, my abstractions transcend their formal components, reaching beyond a minimalist canon. My work is composed of hard edges and thin lines set against an abstract field or a pictorial space. Each color has a quickness that is relative to the colors surrounding it; this gives my paintings visual movement and dislocates the viewer. Through linear and geometric forms, my paintings explore design and mathematical concepts found broadly throughout culture. They are improvised from a wide range of sources such as my conversations with scholars in various fields of music, architecture and engineering, my life experiences and travels."
