About the Item

Two Spaniels on Red Cloth by Hilton Lark Pratt (1838-1873) Scottish artist, is in clear rich red, black and white colors with a softer-toned landscape on the side. This 19th century signed oil painting incorporates classical Renaissance elements with more modern clarity and vivid color in character with this artist’s style. Renaissance influences include the fringed curtain framing of the portrait and a view of a distant landscape on the other. Above the Spaniels the sky is bright with white clouds and blue, but drops into darker cloud above the muted landscape of distant hills. Hilton Lark Pratt died young, in his 35th year. He is known for his landscapes and animal paintings. In particular paintings of his stylized birds are in collections of the Scottish National Trust. This painting is about 16” by 20” in a wooden decorative frame with gilded paint. The frame size is 26” by 30”. Both the frame and the painting are in excellent condition. The frame is not original, but is in the style of older period frames.

Announcement in Village Square, Victorian Oil Painting, 19th Century

Located in Hillsborough, NC

Fine 19th century oil painting of a bustling Austrian/Germanic village with horse, rider and various figures outside an Inn, attributed to Arthur Georg Ramberg (1819-1879), well known for figurative genre paintings. The rider is carrying a bugle, apparently announcing news to the people; men are sitting by the table drinking, one with a raised stein. Women walking by stop to listen, a man carrying a sack has stopped to watch the rider, people are in the Inn doorway, and one is looking out the window. Children pause their playing. The scene is under a large tree beside the Inn; a whole community waiting for news. There is a great deal of detail in the scene, tree and Inn house...

By James Cassie

Located in Woodbury, CT

James Cassie was born at Keithhall near Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, the son of a prosperous tea and spirit merchant. Although briefly a pupil of the artist James Giles, Cassie was largely self-taught. He began his career as a painter of animals and portraits, but on moving to Aberdeen he increasingly turned his attention to local seascapes and coastal scenes, especially at dawn and sunset. He favored these outdoor scenes but continued to paint some domestic subjects and portraits throughout his life. In 1869 he moved to Edinburgh and was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy. Shortly before his death in 1879 he was elected an Academician. This piece is framed in its original frame and the painting is signed lower right and inscribed on the reverse. From the inscription on the reverse, this painting was purchased from an important house sale...
