JOHN F. HERRING . JUNIOR An antique oil painting of horses, ducks, chickens and pigs. Painting Size: 16 x 16" Outside Frame Size: 25 x 25" Exhibited 1860 – 1875 He was born on 21 June 1815 and died in 1907 The eldest son of an illustrious and famous father, J F Herring suffered all his life from the comparisons which naturally go hand in hand with such a relationship. From infancy he was apprenticed to his father’s studio and made to follow his father’s style and subject. The results did not always reach the quality of drawing that his father enjoyed. Herring Jnr is said to have quarrelled with his father and, although an excellent artist, he devoted his career to copying and imitation of his father’s work, particularly farmyard scenes. He collaborated on a number of paintings with Alexander F. Rolfe, not surprisingly since Herring married his sister, Kate Rolfe and she, as A.K.Herring, painted a number of very attractive landscapes in oil often featuring cattle. Although John jnr is best known for his farmyard scenes, he did some very important research work in his early years. One project stayed with him for most of his life. He created a pictorial record of all the Triple Crown winners, the horses, their breeding, owners, trainers and jockeys. This enormous work was carried out in watercolour and although never published, it still exists in a private collection in the USA. It illustrates profoundly the stubborn desire to produce something of lasting interest and importance, but John had to keep his project secret as his father would not have considered it to be a serious commercial proposition. John Jnr was literally surrounded by artists within the family. His mother was a member of the Society of Lady Artists, his uncle Benjamin (died age 26) and his two younger brothers Benjamin Jnr and Charles were all artists who enjoyed varying degrees of success with similar subjects. John Frederick Herring Jnr. was an excellent artist, but suffered the fate of a famous father in the same field, but for this handicap Herring Jnr might have been considered an even better artist in his own right. Known to the rest of the family as Fred, he signed his earliest work J. Fred Herring, sometimes adding Jnr, to his signature. John jnr exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1863-1873, at the British Institute 1864-1867 and occasionally at the Suffolk Street Gallery. He did not exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1863, probably to avoid further conflict with his father.
