About the Item

Block Party - Outdoor neighborhood street parties are part of the summer fun in Southern California where neighbors mingle and their children discover new friends. It is a mix of nationalities playing corn hole, sharing barbecue and potato salad, drinking beer and lemonade and enjoying the hot weather on a sunny day in So Cal. Artist Carole Garland, who studied figure drawing at th Art Institute of Chicago, employs her artistic skills to create a circular design with the children moving, sitting and standing. The ranch houses in rear set the scene. The bright primary and secondary saturated colors - from yellow, orange and red to light turquoise and emerald green - move our eye around the painting through their repetition. Bright balloons, spinners and the American flag add to the holiday celebration. The 20"x24" oil painting on a wood panel is wired for ease of hanging. The natural wood sides can serve as a frame. Carole Garland is in art collections throughout the United States and has shown in venues in every part of Southern California. Most recent exhibitions include the Santa Paula Art Museum; the Betsy Leuk Art Center, Burbank; DeFrenS Gallery, Westlake Village; Gallery of Hermosa, Hermosa Beach; West Los Angeles College. She had individual shows at TAG Gallery for more than 10 years. And participated in group shows with the California Art Club. Currently her work can also be viewed at Kathryn Design Studio, Montecito.

Venice Beach

Venice Beach

By Carole Garland

Located in Palm Desert, CA

Depicts Carole Garland reveling in a hot summer day at the Venice Beach. Colorful beach umbrellas shield the timid from the burning sun while sunbathers bask in the searing heat. Yellow and blue ribbons floating on the wind celebrate Venice’s chaos and its whimsy. To focus the figure of a preteen who stands sentinel, Garland fades out the foreground sunbather on right and obfuscates the crouching man on left. The artist leads us to the groups of mysterious standing and sitting figures in the shadows and beyond. Garland’s collection of figurative work speaks to a contemporary sensibility in her approach to painting, while expressing a curiosity about the human form and an irrepressible concern for the human spirit. Carole Garland graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the University of the Americas in Mexico City. She has worked privately with artists Keith Finch and Ron Pekar, taken numerous workshops and was mentored by David Gallup...
