PROVENANCE Private collection, Germany; Anonymous sale Hampel Kunstauktionen, Munich, Germany, 9 December 2011, as lot nr. 294 as ‘Leiden school’, with ill.; Private collecton, Europe REFERENCE This painting is known at the RKD (the Netherlands Institute for Art History) in The Hague, The Netherlands, under nr. 276240 NOTE We are grateful to Dr. Fred G. Meijer, former Curator Old Master Paintings of the RKD, The Hague, who confirmed the authorship by Bartholomeus Maton. This charming painting depicts a shepherdess calmly sleeping with her feet in a stream, who is being teased by a young boy in the right who is about to poor water on her. The finely executed work is painted on an oak panel and preserved in a very good condition. Note the bright colours, refinement in the details e.g. in in the straw hat and the striking magpie bird in the foreground. The piece is unsigned, but attributed to the the rare Leiden master Bartholomeus Maton (1641 – after 1684) on stylistic grounds and accepted as such by the RKD in The Hague.
