About the Item

Lannes’ painting unfolds within a field of tension between presence and dissolution, where images emerge only to resist full apprehension. Situated at the threshold of figuration and abstraction, his compositions oscillate between recognizable forms and unstable, diffuse passages that defer certainty, inviting the viewer into an active process of reconstruction. At the core of his work lies a persistent engagement with the body, understood not merely as a physical entity, but as a site where cultural, historical, and symbolic forces converge. Within this framework, the intertwined dynamics of sex, power, and violence surface as underlying structures rather than explicit narratives, permeating the image with a latent intensity. His painterly language is marked by a sensorial use of color and expansive, gestural brushwork, where density and dispersion coexist. Areas of chromatic abundance confront zones of erasure or fragmentation, producing compositions that are at once deliberate and contingent. The surface retains traces of its own making, allowing accident and intention to coexist as generative forces. Rather than offering resolution, Lannes’ work sustains a condition of openness. Meaning is not fixed but constructed in the encounter, as the viewer navigates between what is shown and what remains withheld. In this space, painting becomes less an act of explanation than one of evocation, an invitation to inhabit the image as it unfolds.
