About the Item

For David Edward Byrd Rock and Roll art collectors this is one incredible rare work of art. It is an original painting created by David Byrd based on David's original 1968 first drawing for Hendrix's first 1968 appearance at The Fillmore East. It is featured numerous times in the new coffee table book on David Edward Byrd's art titled "Poster Child" This original painting on acetate of Jimi was painted in 2006. It was based on David's 1968 original drawing of the very 1st version for Jimi's first Fillmore East appearance. When Bill Graham asked David if he can "add the other two guys" to the image, David created the now famous orange poster with all 3 members of the Experience and this first version of the poster was never created until 2006 when we asked David if he could create an original painting based on the very first drawing that he did for the concert. This original painting was exhibited at the Bethel Woods Museum which is on the site of the original 1969 Woodstock Music Festival. This original art was painted in the same exact way that David painted his other painting for the famous Hendrix poster in 1968. It is painted on the back side of a black line film acetate. I included an image in this listing of the backside of the acetate where you can see all of the tedious work that went into creating this painting. It is signed on a white strip along the bottom 1968-David Edward Byrd-2006. I included in this listing for reference purposes an image of David's 1968 drawings of both versions where Bill Graham asks if David can add the other two guys to the art. David Edward Byrd created some of the most memorable Classic Theatre and Rock and Roll images from the 1960s and 70s. A New coffee table book on the art of David Edward Byrd is now available, titled "Poster Child" it will definitely raise the price of his original art. We have included an image of the book so that you can see what it looks like. David created ALL of the Art for Bill Graham’s Fillmore East, including their Program covers and Rock posters, the art for Jimi Hendrix’s first Fillmore East appearance, The Rolling Stones 1969 World Tour art, The Who’s Performance of Tommy at the New York Metropolitan Opera House and The Fillmore, and The Grateful Dead Swell Dance Concert to name only a few. He also created the poster art for the original location of the 1969 Woodstock music festival . His memorable images were also used for classic Broadway shows like Godspell, Follies and Jesus Christ Superstar to mention only a few. These museum quality drawings are rarely made available for sale, they are not only wonderful rare works of art, but are truly historically important works in the field of Theatre and Rock and Roll collecting. It has been framed with archival double matting. David Byrd's poster art is in many museum collections, including : The Louvre, in Paris, Victoria & Albert in London, The Museum of Modern Art in New York and The Smithsonian in Washington, DC. We have included an image featuring some of the memorable and incredible art David Byrd has created for the Rock and Roll industry and classic Broadway shows. A coffee table book is available now on the art of David Byrd titled "Poster Child" The prices on his original art will go up significantly now that "Poster Child" the book is available. An image of the book can be seen in this listing. You can see that part of this original painting is featured on the cover of the New Coffee table book "Poster Child" , it is also featured in the book.

Featured in this listing is the Original Color pencil Sketch created in 2006 by David Byrd prior to working on the finished painting which we also have available for sale. This drawing created in 2006 is based on David's very first original 1968 drawing for Hendrix's very first Fillmore East concert. It only featured Hendrix, and Bill Graham asked David if he could add the other two members of The Experience, which became the famous Fillmore East orange poster that featured all three members of the Experience. I included and image in this listing of the original pencil drawing from 1968 where you can see Bill requesting all three members to be included in the poster art. In this color rendering, David Byrd indicates two possible color choices for the poster in this sketch by listing the color numbers. He shows one half with one color combination and the other half with a different color combination. That was so that Bill Graham could choose which colors he preferred if the original 1968 poster art was to use this image. A great original color drawing that David Byrd created to show the colors of the first version of the 1968 Hendrix poster...

HISTORY Over fifty years ago, Rick Griffin produced his epic poster masterpiece of symbolic iconography, "The Flying Eyeball", in a burst of inspiration. The image has arguably become the most recognizable and evocative image of the psychedelic 60s, being to Psychedelic Art what Warhol's soup tin is to Pop Art - an instant identifier for the age of Acid Rock. The Winged Eye symbol has its origins in antiquity, appearing in the art of the Egyptians and Assyrians. Rick particularly venerated the late 1950s' version, that of famed lowbrow artist Von Dutch, whose interpretation resonated with the roots of hot-rod culture, so central to Rick's Southern California upbringing. Von's Flying Eye was stylistically informed by traditional American tattooing and car culture, and he may also have been exposed to this image as nose art on WWII USAAF airplanes, an art form that influenced decorative automobile art...
