About the Item

Dennis Sheehan Approaching Rain, circa 2025 Signed lower left Oil on canvas 14 x 23 inches Dennis Sheehan was born in Boston in 1950. His work is based upon the Barbizon School with faithful adherence to his 19th century precursors. In the tradition of the tonalist painters, Sheehan focuses on the light conditions and the atmosphere of the landscape affected by nature's changing seasons. In his contemporary work, Sheehan employs the dark palette and thickly pigmented surfaces influenced by the French Barbizon School as well as the Hudson River School. Maintaining a muted chromatic scheme, Sheehan has sensitivity to atmosphere and the subtle tonality of color. Naturalist mimesis combined with poetic sensibility is the basis of Sheehan’s objective as an artist. His work is the product of the conscious distillation of historical paintings ranging from the American Barbizon to the abstractions of Franz Kline. Finding out at a young age about his love for art, Sheehan’s father would take him to see museums and exhibitions. Sheehan’s more pragmatic mother choose a different career, but once she was convinced that Sheehan was convinced he would pursue a career in art, both of his parents were very supportive. After high school, Sheehan studied for four years at the Vesper George School of Art, in the Boston area, where he studied under Robert Hunter Douglas. Hunter’s traditional and realistic style made a lasting impression on him. After graduation Sheehan went on to study at Montserrat School of Visual Arts, also in Boston, for two more years. He studied under George Gabin, who also painted in a paints in a classical style. There, Sheehan learned the techniques of American Tonalism, the modulation between light and dark, and adopted this style as his own. He became particularly fascinated by the effect of light on landscape during transitional moments: dusk, dawn, and the time preceding or following storms, when the subtle reflections of light on the landscape and atmospheric conditions produce a sublime panorama. Sheehan's work is included in major public and private collections, from the Guild of Boston Artists to The White House.
