About the Item

Compelling mid century landscape of Church of Christ the Scientist in Boston by Frank Blasingame (American; 1903-1967), circa 1960. This is a rare piece by Blasingame of a well-known building. Apparently, one of his wives was a practicing Christian Scientist and this could have been made as a gift for her. Signed "Blasingame" lower left corner; from a collection of his and his wife Marguerite Blasingame's work. Unframed. Image, 30"H x 39"W. Frank Blasingame was born in San Francisco, he attended the University of Nevada and went to the Hawaiian Islands in his third year where he took up painting and carving with the chisel. He spent seven years in Hawaii where he and his wife Marguerite Blasingame did commissioned pieces in stone and wood for public places. He is known for ultra-modern and non-realistic work with a highly spiritual quality that may be compared to the surrealists. Art Director of the Denver Museum Donald Bear said that Blasingame's work to "have a certain eerie and uncanny quality. They are landscapes of some strange world isolated in the mind and imagination of the artist, and having their origin possibility in the spells and native mystery of the island."
