About the Item

"Angel Forty Two" Conte Crayon Drawing on Paper, Over Print of a Dutch Boat Gene Holtan (1930-2016), a prolific artist and illustrator, left an indelible mark on the California artistic community. His illustrations, and particularly his caricatures, garnered attention from publications such as the Saturday Evening Post, Ladies’ Home Journal, Good Housekeeping, and The New York Times. His artistic career spanned decades, and his illustrated works ranged from books on history, to bird watching, to children’s books. After relocating to Santa Cruz in 1974, Holtan transitioned from commercial illustration to focus on fine art. The last fifteen years of his life, Holtan moved away from his signature narrative style to devote his full attention to abstract painting. Signed lower left G. Holtan Exhibited Art Museum of Santa Cruz County 1992 label on verso. Image, 11"H x 11.75"W Frame 15.038"H x 14.038"W x 1.25" Gene Holtan was born 1930 in Saskatchewan Canada. After studying and not graduating from the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art in Calgary, Alberta, he went on to study and not graduate form Art Center in Los Angeles. Financial demands of family life forced him from fine arts into a successful career as commercial artist. He illustrated the occasional book, and created commercial art for clients including the NFL, Ramparts Magazine, Rolling Stone, F-Troop (TV series title drawings), Saturday Evening Post, Neiman Marcus, Lady’s Home Journal, and never-ending 4 Day tire ads in the Los Angeles Times. His renown as “not a man of few words” led to his year as president of the Society of Illustrators, and numerous stints as instructor at Chouinards and the Tutor Arts Program. Gene finally escaped commercial art, students, and grown children by moving in 1974 to Santa Cruz with Elizabeth Sanchez and two of her children. They lived on Beach Hill in the famous Green Gables Victorian. Holtan collaborated throughout much of his life on projects with his partner, fellow artist and potter, Elizabeth Sanchez. Together, they pursued a life dedicated to art and adventure.
