About the Item

Signed lower right, 'G. Gyllenhammar' for Gerhard Napoleon Gyllenhammar (Swedish, 1873-1968) and painted circa 1910. A bold, Post-Impressionist figural showing nymphs and satyrs engaged in bacchanalian revelry. With unhesitating frankness, Gyllenhammar renders a provocative interplay between mischievous nymphs and a satyr caught by the tail between them. Filled with movement and energy, ‘Satyrs and Nymphs’ exemplifies the jubilant style of this notable Swedish modernist. Painter, graphic artist and sculptor, Gerhard Gyllenhammar studied at the Konstnärsförbundets Skola (Artist’s Association School) in Stockholm before working in Paris from 1901-1914, producing drawings for local magazines under the pseudonym ‘Gérard’. His professional artwork was printed in ‘Boulevard’ publications featuring humorous and sensational headlines designed to entertain passers-by. After returning to Sweden, Gyllenhammar worked as an illustrator for the satirical magazine ‘Nya Nisse’, edited by Julius Hodell, and created illustrations for Disa Holberg’s book “I slynåren. För tjugo år sedan” (The Wild Teenage Years: Twenty Years Ago, 1925). Gyllenhammar exhibited throughout Sweden, including at the Baltic Exhibition in Malmö (1914), the Nordic Graphics Exhibition at Liljevalch’s Art Gallery (1924) and the Swedish General Art Association. In 1936, he participated as an art competitor in the Berlin Summer Olympics. The work of Gerhard Gyllenhammar can be found in permanent collections including the National Museum of Stockholm and the Moderna Museet. We are pleased to offer this vibrant figural dating to the artist’s Paris period. "Satyr and Nymph", Art Deco Masterpiece Painting with Nudes in Paradise, 1932

One of the most sensual and brilliant Art Deco paintings in the French manner that we have ever offered, this idyllic scene of Satyr and Nymph, lounging under a fruited tree with lush fields in the distance, was painted by Gheorghe Labin in 1932. Labin was one of Romania's avant-garde artists in the 1920s and 1930s, and clearly he trained in Paris, because the lush scene, brilliant palette, and confident brush strokes indicate an intimate familiarity with the leading painters associated with what we now call Art Deco. This painting was entered into the Salon Bucarest in 1932, in a period when Labin exhibited with Mattis Teutsch, the de facto leader of Romania's modern painters, together with Corneliu Baba...
