About the Item

FREE SHIPPING AT CHECKOUT Joan Amid Narcissus is a new painting by artist Honora Jacob. Also included in the images are two other paintings that were recently completed. Here is an article that goes into detail about her new series of paintings : "The Lexington artist Honora Jacob seems to be taking her place on this continuum in “Myths, Legends and Lore,” a striking set of twelve oil-and-gold-leaf portraits of women of history and legend at the Lexington Art League (LAL) . Like Holbein, she understands the power of the direct, largely straight-on, essentially confrontational gaze. And like Wiley, she appreciates the ability of classic endpaper, wallpaper and textile designs (of the sort associated with William Morris, among others) to convey richness and complexity and add visual interest. (Jacob seems to agree with Georgia O’Keeffe, who once described her art practice as “filling a space in a beautiful way.”) To these influences, she has added certain tropes of medieval, Renaissance and Byzantine art, in particular luxurious gold leaf and icon-like spheres that frame the faces in most of these portraits. Divinity is not implied here, presumably, but perhaps something like sainthood, even a kind of queenship, with or without geographical realms to rule. The teenaged warrior in “Joan Amid the Narcissus” often depicted in mail and armor, appears here in a chic black garment of vaguely Asian design, a pale blue ribbon flowing around her neck as if to remind us of her youth; it’s the sword she brandishes and the preternatural calm in her eyes that tell us what she’s capable of doing.

Virtue of Knowledge reexamines portraits of individuals throughout history to illustrate the premise that history flows into the present in an ever-changing state. And, with each new context, we view people and events through a contemporary lens specific to that moment. Virtue of Knowledge appropriates and contextualizes original portrait elements to create reinvented portraits using technique and patterning that brings a contemporary context and perspective to these historically inspired portraits STATEMENT History flows into the present in an ever-changing state. And, with each new context, we view people and events through a contemporary lens specific to that moment. My current body of work, Contemporary Histories, explores this phenomena by re-interpreting historical portraiture using a contemporary visual language. It is my intent to create a modern visual lens through which to view these individuals and their legacies, as they continue to flow into the present in ever-changing states. As a keen example of how history changes and morphs over time, I have selected portraits of women who chose an alternate path from the traditional ones prescribed in their times. Some of these individuals overtly stepped outside the traditional roles prescribed for women to realize their goals. Others astutely maneuvered within the social system they lived in to obtain their aspirations. Whether altruistic or nefarious, these women and their actions altered the future cultural landscape. Through a 21st century lens, we view them as women with minds of their own, who made choices to control their own lives and futures. Often, in stark contrast to how they were viewed and how their actions were recorded in their own times. For a modern visual language, a combination of fine and decorative arts has inspired my approach to this subject. Employing several formal contemporary tenets, most notably, rather than place the figure in a 3-dimensional space, as in the originals, the figures reside in flat graphic picture planes of damask designs, repetitive patterns or botanical grounds as modern settings for their modern legacies. These graphic backgrounds symbolize what was historically considered a woman’s proper domain, in particular, gardening and needle crafts, such as; quilting, embroidery and sewing. Formally, unlike the originals, I am working alla prima, rather than with a base grisaille and delicate layers of glazing. While, the patterned and botanical environments, along with gold leaf applications, contemporary compositions and color palettes are formally influenced by a spectrum of 19th - 21st century artists and artisans; from Gustav Klimt and the Wiener Werkstatte to Henri Rousseau, Tamara de Lempicka and Will Cotton. "Lady in Black” Oil Painting 53" x 27.5" inch by Katherine Bakhoum Tisné

"Lady in Black” Oil Painting 53" x 27.5" inch by Katherine Bakhoum Tisné

By Katherine Bakhoum-Tisné

Located in Culver City, CA

"Lady in Black” Oil Painting 53" x 27.5" inch by Katherine Bakhoum Tisné Katherine Bakhoum represents art that has been forgotten for a long while. She draws upon the concept and the subject of the orientalism and the enchantment of that period. Through her work we can feel the researches she has done to reveal her Egyptian origins and the magic and power of the bygone times. Katherine Bakhoum has succeeded in imprinting her own stamp to evoke a new world full of charm, nostalgia and magic that is deeply implanted in her canvas. Her power dwells in creating her own style of contemporary expressionism building upon the old orientalism. Katherine Bakhoum’s art comes up out of an Egyptian childhood and from the distance of a life spent in France. What is left unsaid is as important as what is shown. Decorative yes, as in old orientalism, when everything was texture and what wasn’t texture was veiled, a reincarnation of old spirits, dervishes, orientalist motifs and the stuff of a once powerful civilization, the better to suggest it all might just come to life again. The choice of ancient subject matters, the echo of orientalist pieces in the collages, like the echo of the appeal of ancient gestures, of foreign lands, and domestic tapestries, all this weaves up out of Katherine Bakhoum’s creations. Sometimes we only have the line of a horizon on which to hang our imagination, sometimes we only have the trace of a profile in the shadows. What we always have is a persistent belief in beauty. Where there is beauty, there is hope. Katherine Bakhoum has abandoned neither. SOLO EXHIBITIONS Claudine Legrand Gallery: Annual exhibitions from 1996 to 2016 Safar Khan...
