About the Item

After Joshua Reynolds Girl leaning on a pedestal Oil on canvas Canvas Size - 26 x 33 in Framed Size - 39 x 32 in Sir Joshua Reynolds was the leading portrait painter of 18th-century Britain and a central figure in the development of the Grand Manner in English art. Born in Devon, he trained in London before travelling to Italy, where he absorbed the influence of the Old Masters, particularly Raphael and Michelangelo, whose idealising approach would shape his own work. On his return to London, Reynolds quickly established himself as the foremost portraitist of his generation, attracting a distinguished clientele that included members of the aristocracy, political figures, and leading cultural personalities. His portraits are characterised by their elegance, compositional sophistication, and a tendency to elevate the sitter through classical reference and refined gesture, aligning contemporary subjects with the traditions of history painting. In 1768 Reynolds became the first President of the Royal Academy, a position from which he exerted considerable influence over British artistic practice. His Discourses on Art, delivered to students of the Academy, set out his theories on painting and the importance of studying the Old Masters, helping to define artistic standards for the period. Reynolds’s work played a crucial role in raising the status of portraiture in Britain, transforming it into a vehicle for both likeness and idealisation. By the time of his death in 1792, he was widely regarded as the dominant artistic figure of his age.
