About the Item

Lalu Prasad Shaw - Untitled Crayon on Board 21 x 15 inches, 2022 This charming artwork by Lalu Prasad Shaw celebrates the beauty found in everyday life. The composition portrays a seated woman engaged in the familiar act of adorning herself, a quiet gesture that reflects themes of self-care, femininity, and contemplation. With her expressive eyes and relaxed posture, she radiates a sense of calm confidence and timeless grace. Shaw’s artistic language is immediately recognizable through its elegant contours, stylized figures, and restrained palette. Inspired by the visual traditions of Bengal and Indian folk art, the artist strips away unnecessary detail, allowing the figure’s presence and emotional character to take center stage. The subtle textures of crayon on board lend warmth and softness to the work, enhancing its intimate atmosphere. The carefully balanced composition and decorative patterns create a harmonious rhythm across the surface, while the earthy reds and gentle neutral tones evoke a sense of nostalgia and simplicity. Rather than portraying a specific individual, the figure becomes a universal representation of beauty, dignity, and everyday human experience. Ideal for collectors who appreciate figurative art and the rich traditions of Indian modernism, this work embodies Lalu Prasad Shaw’s enduring ability to transform ordinary moments into poetic visual narratives. Its quiet elegance and understated charm make it a captivating addition to any art collection, bringing warmth, character, and cultural depth to the space it inhabits. Style : Known widely for his highly stylized portraits of Bengali women and couples, Lalu Prasad Shaw’s works lay the most emphasis on his subject’s physical characteristics. Capturing the expressions of his subjects perfectly with the greatest economy of line and colour each of Shaw’s paintings has an intimate feel to it. Influenced by the pre-independence Company School of art, the traditional Kalighat Pat and the Ajanta cave paintings, Shaw’s works, mainly executed in gouache or tempera, like his own person, are simple and graceful, having a very still, well-composed and smooth exterior. This senior artist draws his inspiration primarily from nature and the milieu surrounding the great Bengali middle class, often depicting pleasant and quiet scenes from his own life on his canvases and papers. His style is unique and modern in its adaptation of academic and traditional Indian formats. A particularly notable aspect of Shaw's paintings is their simple yet sophisticated look. One notices a seamless synthesis of different stylistic elements to achieve a phenomenal effect. About the Artist and his work : Born : 1937 in Bengal. By Amita Bhatt

Located in Houston, TX

This painting on paper is a playful, yet elegant depiction of a personal mantra of Bhatt’s in which she concedes, “life is a circus.” Amita Bhatt received her BFA from the Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara, India and her MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, Maryland. Bhatt’s work has been exhibited at noteworthy venues such as the Bluestar Contemporary Art Center, Walters Art Museum, The Station Museum of Contemporary Art, and The Project Row Houses, all in the United States as well as Museo Pedro de Osma in Peru. She has also been the recipient of several prestigious awards and recently served as a Grant Panelist on the National Endowment for the Arts. Her works are included in many important private and public collections. Bhatt digs deep into world philosophies and mythologies to answer questions pertaining to our political as well as personal belief systems. Unafraid to explore uncomfortable territories, the artist mines from a range of sources to create hybrid creatures that are often symbolic of man’s psychological condition in an angst-ridden zeitgeist. In exploring issues of identity and violence, Bhatt’s research led her to the beginnings of mankind. Most ancient creation...
