About the Item

Sleepwalking Portraits, Nicole Chaput - Oil on polypropylene, - 39 x 32 cm / 15.35 x 12.62 in - Colorful portraits, c. 2025 Nicole Chaput expands painting until it becomes body, working through a deeply carnal and tactile painterly language. Her speculative anatomies of those who call themselves women carry fragments of art history, popular culture, mythology and religious iconography, where Madonnas, brides and Medusas cease to function as fixed archetypes and instead merge, fracture and continuously reinvent one another. Rather than illustrating these references, Chaput allows them to inhabit the same body, transforming each figure into a dense landscape of accumulated narratives. In doing so she unsettles inherited representations of femininity and the gendered gaze through which female bodies have historically been constructed. At the same time, her paintings refuse the limits of the pictorial plane. Relief, sculptural supports, textiles and suspended forms allow painting to acquire weight, volume and physical presence, occupying the gallery as bodies rather than images.

By Julia Kiryanova

For Julia Kiryanova, painting is a dialogue – a dialogue which she beautifully facilitates, layering her work with various techniques. At the heart of much of her work an inherent fascination for people lies, intimately displaying abandoned figures seemingly floating in an abstract dream world, where time has stopped everything, but them. Julia Kiryanova has exhibited work at Amsterdam museum, Museum Op Solder and The Holocaust Museum...
