About the Item

Paul Deltombe (French, 1878 – 1978) Allegorie des recoltes Oil on canvas Signed ‘Deltombe’ (lower right) 68 x 38.3/8in. (172.8 x 97.5cm.) This monumental canvas by Paul Deltombe presents an allegorical celebration of the harvest, suffused with a lyrical sense of rhythm and harmony. The scale of the work, coupled with its balanced composition and rich palette, reflects Deltombe’s command of both classical subject matter and modern painterly sensibility. Paul Deltombe was a prominent French painter whose career spanned much of the 20th century. Born in 1878, he trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and quickly established himself within avant-garde circles. He exhibited alongside artists such as Matisse and Derain, engaging with Fauvism’s vivid colour and expressive line while developing a style rooted in order and structure. Deltombe later became associated with the Salon d’Automne and the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, contributing to the vibrant artistic debates of his era. Throughout his long career, Deltombe explored both figuration and decorative allegory, often imbuing traditional themes with modern vitality. His works are represented in French public collections, and he is increasingly recognised for his unique position at the intersection of academic tradition and early modernist innovation. Allégorie des récoltes stands as an impressive example of Deltombe’s mature work, combining allegorical content with an assured painterly touch and monumental presence. In a recently hand finished gilt composite frame with cream slip.
