Sébastien Ardouin Dumazet is a French contemporary artist born in 1972. After obtaining a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from the University of Aix-en-Provence in 1996, he dedicated himself fully to painting. His early work, influenced by Primo Levi and Zoran Mušič. His recent work is dedicated to a luminous and poetic celebration of nature. Inspired by the diffused light of the Cotentin region where he now resides, and drawing influence from Eugène Boudin, Ardouin Dumazet focuses on floral subjects and landscapes that reveal the fragility and secret beauty of the living world. His current signature technique involves a sophisticated layering process on canvas. He begins by applying metallic gold leaf, which he then chemically oxidizes to create rich, textured backgrounds with unique patinas ranging from deep earth tones to vibrant iridescence. Over these complex, shimmering foundations, he paints delicate floral compositions in oil, using fine glazes to capture the translucency of petals and the intensity of natural light. This method creates a striking contrast between the raw, aged quality of the oxidized gold and the fresh, vibrant vitality of the flowers. Often working on small to medium formats, the artist treats each canvas as a meditation on life’s ephemeral nature. He frequently presents these works in vintage photographic frames, replacing traditional family portraits with images of trees, skies, or blossoms to evoke a sense of collective memory and timeless nostalgia.
